Lead nurses in the field of haematology practice will front the session which includes topics like transplant donor issues, transfusion and sickle cell and thalassaemia. Thursday 6 and Friday 7 December 2007 Infection in the Immunocompromised Child Advances in both diagnosis and treatment of infections continue; with increasing use of nonculture diagnostic techniques, identification of new pathogens and the arrival of new antivirals, antifungals and, at last, antibiotics. Continuing advances in the use of specific immunomodulating therapies for the treatment of inflammatory disorders, malignancy and within the bone marrow transplantation, mean challenges remain in preventing and treating infection in children we treat. Thursday 22 November 2007 North West Haematology Nurses Group Nurses are making a difference to the management of patients both in primary care and acute services. Specialist nurses are leading outreach services and nurse-led clinics, to ensure haematology patients have specialised care with less frequent hospitals admissions during their treatment. Two speakers at the NWHNG meeting, Barbara Christie, at the James Cook University Hospital and Faye Armstrong, at City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust will be presenting their work which links community and acute services. Both were featured in the recent issue of Nursing Leukaemia News magazine no.8 for the nurse information campaign by Leukaemia Research. Friday 16 November 2007 Update of Aspects of Diagnosis and Management in Malignant Haematology A day looking specifically at the leukaemias. Dr Claire Dearden, Consultant Haematologist at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust will present an update on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and lymphoma. There will also be presentations on donor issues and transplantation. Barry Quinn, Lecturer Practitioner for haemato-oncology, will discuss psychological issues surrounding transplantation. Watch out for the Nursing Leukaemia stand and hear about receiving information specific to nurses.
