Sir Ian Botham with chocolates
Sir Ian Botham with chocolates

Release Date: 1 September 2008

Giving money to charity has never been so enjoyable! Special chocolates sold in support of Sir Ian Botham’s 2008 charity walk are available from Monday 1 September for a suggested donation of £1, with all profits going to Leukaemia Research, the UK’s leading blood cancer charity. And a lucky few will win a once in a lifetime chance to meet and walk with Beefy on one of the nine days of his walk.

Just 40 golden tickets have been hidden in some of the packs of the limited edition chocolates. The special chocolates are made by Yorkshire chocolatiers Whitakers and will be available in the Bury St Edmunds Wickes stores. Marks & Spencer, one of this year's sponsors, will also be selling the treats in each of the nine M&S stores, including the Bury St Edmunds M&S, where Sir Ian will begin his walks this October.

Sir Ian said: “I’m walking again in October to beat childhood leukaemia but I need the Great British public to support me. People can buy my chocolates - that’s a hardship isn’t it! And if you find a golden ticket, bad luck you have to come and work off what you’ve eaten! Seriously, the chocolates are a great way to support my charity walk and donate to Leukaemia Research at the same time.”

Beefy’s 12th charity walk is kicking off in Taunton where he started his cricket career and the place he first met youngsters with leukaemia who inspired him to start his fundraising walks.

Speaking about the walk, Sir Ian said: “In 1985, when I first started walking to raise funds for Leukaemia Research, the survival rate for children with leukaemia was 20 percent; now it’s 80 percent. Join me on my 2008 walk and together we will help beat this terrible disease. I am determined to see all children survive in my lifetime.”

Sir Ian’s route will take in Taunton on 10 October, Windsor on 11 October, Tunbridge Wells on 12 October, Bury St Edmunds on 13 October, Stratford-Upon-Avon on 14 October, Llandudno on 15 October, Harrogate on 16 October, Milngavie (nr Glasgow) on 17 October and Durham on 18 October.
