|  | Leukaemia Research was part of the documentary series Children Fighting Cancer. The inspirational series was shown on BBC 1 in June 2007 and followed the lives of nine children, and their families, who are affected by childhood leukaemia.
The documentaries featured children and their families dealing with the various stages of leukaemia whist trying to maintain their normal lives. From Andrew who was scared but didn’t want his parents to worry, to Ellie who developed a “jelly belly”, all children showed extraordinary strength of character dealing with the cancer and its side effects and complications.
The personal stories were interwoven with explanations about the groundbreaking scientific breakthroughs that are generating hope for the future. Twins Olivia and Isabella (Olivia has leukaemia, whilst Isabella is healthy) are helping us understand how leukaemia develops in children. Every programme in the series featured the Minimal Residual Disease test which has been developed by Leukaemia Research.
Our research is making a real difference to the lives of children, but we are still a long way from a cure for all children and adults with leukaemia and other blood cancers.
