|  | This paper assesses the role of itraconazole in paediatric haemato-oncology practice.
As the paper states invasive fungal infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality amongst neutropenic cancer patients.
The paper states that the most common fungal infections in Europe. North America and Canada are aspergillus and Candida and therapeutic intervention has limited success.
The paper covers absorption issues with itraconazole stating that the liquid formulation has better absorption, especially when given in fasting situations. Interestingly the use of acidic beverages (Cola) can aid the absorption of capsules.
The pharmacology and pharmacokinetics also discusses intravenous preparation and drug interactions.
This is a useful paper for all practitioners as it informs about the medication also considering the mechanisms of action, adverse side effects and prophylactic use.
