| | This paper highlights the current issues and considerations in the ongoing trials into gene therapy.
After the second occurrence of a leukaemia type illness in a patient in a gene therapy trial for X linked severe combined immune deficiency disorder (SCID), the FDA has halted all trials using retroviral vectors.
The UK departments of health’s gene therapy advisory committee also recommend that additional measures be put into place to protect patients in gene therapy trials.
The paper states that these results are disappointing as progress was encouraging; the current belief is that this is only a setback not the end of gene therapy.
This is a useful paper for all practitioners increasing awareness of current events and also showing the effectiveness of regulatory bodies in trial therapy.
