Cancer and cancer treatments

Hosted by St Nicholas Hospice
The two-hour session covers how cancer develops and spreads; why cancer treatments work; and the application of theory to support care. Nurses wanting to build an understanding of cancer, particularly recently trained nurses, will find this useful. Discussion will include the cell development of the cancer and relevance of different therapies for specific cancers. There will also be reference to the staging of cancer and its relevance, key treatments and how they work, and the biological nature of cancer when supporting cancer patients.

Haematological emergencies

Hosted by the West Midlands Haematology Nurses Group
The WMHNG the day focuses heavily on neutropenia sepsis. There is an afternoon programme with shorter sessions on Atra syndrome, tumour lysis and spinal cord compression. Delegates can pick up ‘Dietary advice for patients with neutropenia’ at the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research patient information stand. Over the years the group have presented a series of national haematology Master Classes for senior nurses and an annual study day for more junior nurses locally. This is a chance for haematology nurses to gain clinical updates on these subjects as well as an opportunity to network.

Stem Cell Transplantation in Cancer Practice

Hosted by The Royal Marsden School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation
This 5-day module, which is part of the haemato-oncology nurses programme, will increase your understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of care, treatment and rehabilitation of patients undergoing haemopoietic stem cell transplantation. The module explores transplant issues and examines the physiological, psychosocial and spiritual are in this area from a multi-professional perspective. On completion of this module, students will be awarded 20 credits at degree or masters level. This course is running again on Monday 19 July to Friday 23 July 2010.

3rd Annual Educational Meeting - East of Scotland

Hosted by the East of Scotland Haematology Nurses Group
The regional meeting for all nurses working in the haematology setting will present the following themes within haematological cancers. Shelley Dolan, chief nurse at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, will discuss the role of chief nurse in cancer care; Dr Dominic Culligan explains the myelodysplastic syndromes; Dr Kerry Davidson will give an update on the current treatment in myeloma; and Mandy McHahon will explore the role of psychologist in haematology. There will also be some discussion about blood transfusion and a haemophilia update with workshops.

Advances in acute myeloid leukaemia

This a joint event for allied health professionals and nurses interested in research and diagnostics about acute myeloid leukaemia study event on Friday 2 October 2009 at the Postgraduate Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
Topics to be covered will include: current trials in AML 16 and 17: MRD monitoring, novel strategies, leukaemia stem cell monitoring and targeting, nurse clinical practice approaches and a research nurse workshop session.There will be a patient information stand with a range of charity information including Nursing Leukaemia literature.
