*The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) defines guidelines as:

"Clinical guidelines are recommendations for the care of individuals by healthcare professionals; they are based on the best available evidence. Guidelines assist the practice of healthcare professionals"

It is important to understand that, although guidelines represent the collected opinions of a group of experts on best clinical practice based on best available evidence, they are only guidelines. In most cases treatment will be based on guidelines, where these exist, but a clinician may decide that it is not in the best interests of a specific patient to be treated exactly, or even broadly, according to the guidelines.

START - Start of The Art oncology in Europe
START is intended as a state-of-the-art instrument to support clinical oncologists and physicians in their everyday oncology practice. START is provided for free on the Internet.
START is not a set of clinical practice guidelines. These are generally targeted to a specific geographical context.
They are formulated by also incorporating cost/effectiveness evaluations.
On the contrary, START mainly focuses on effectiveness, and available options on diagnosis and treatment are elaborated trying to combine objective knowledge and clinical expertise. Obviously, it is possible to use START as a reference instrument for the construction of clinical practice guidelines.
